Be it the drums beating the heart into Beltane or the meticulous march of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo; the fiery fiddles thrashing the cosy confines of The Royal Oak or the serene violins stretching out into the warm and generous acoustics of the Usher Hall – Edinburgh true to form, delivers her concerto of contrasts. And if there is one thing that Edinburgh does better than contrasts, it’s Festivals.
Edinburgh hosts more Festivals than a street fiddler’s repertoire. Scots love a cèilidh or a ‘gaitherin’ – the banter, new connections and inspiration, all blend together into a vibrant potpourri of music and arts. The Edinburgh International and Fringe Festivals set the stage for the flourish of festivals that followed. Celebrating and showcasing film, theatre, literature, storytelling, science, Scottish culture, comedy, circus, cabaret, arts, music and all that jazz.
Edinburgh’s summer festivities start off on a syncopated beat with the Edinburgh Blues and Jazz Festival. Founded in 1978 with this year featuring more than 100 concerts over a 10 day run, the Edinburgh Blues and Jazz festival has become the root note in the local music calendar.

Sauntering down the alleys of the Southside and up the cobbles off the Cowgate, bubbles of music, chatter and laughter escape from heavy-set doorways.
