Summer Solstice and the Divine Masculine

June is a magical month in Scotland.  The never-ending evenings, slow and scenic sunsets and early luminescent dawns, make it feel as if we have all the time in the world.  Wild spaces are beautifully bustling, birds are nesting, bees are buzzing and animals are devotedly raising their young.  Kits, cubs and human kids are rapidly growing, blissfully frolicking under the love and protection of their parents.

Not much sleep is had as we crescendo towards the apex of light.  Even though rest is low, energy is high.  In myriad ancient mythologies, from the Incas and Rapa Nui, to the Greeks and Romans, the masculine driving force of Nature, often the Father deity, was symbolised as either the Sun, or the ‘Sky Father’.  The divine masculine denotes action, structure, protection and integrity.

What is the Summer Solstice?

The Summer Solstice is the longest day of the year, one of four Quarter days of the ancient Celtic calendar.  A clear marker in the shift of seasons, summer is well and truly here!  How fitting that this year the Summer Solstice falls on Father’s Day, day of the longest Sun and Sky, when the Green Man energy of bloom and blossom is at its peak.  In Edinburgh this means a staggering 18 hours of daylight – plenty of time to honour and celebrate our father figures!

Our men’s cross necklace, the Celtic Cross, represents the Sun, each limb marking the four seasons and four directions – four being the number of stability and structure. St Brigid’s Cross is also a popular choice.

What are the Archetypes of Fatherhood?

Inti the Incan Sun God (also represented by a cross), Thor the Norse God of Thunder, Longwang the Chinese Sky Father in his Dragon form – are all embodiments of the primordial archetypes of fatherhood – vitality, strength, protection and nurturing growth.  Balance between the divine energies is integral to harmony, a delicate dance of opposing and complementary forces.

Whether you’re looking for a gift for your dad, grandad, stepdad or whoever the important father figure in your life is, they will love our men’s necklace range, bringing together the beautiful and bold.  Are they a Thor, full of vitality and strength, or do they have protective Longwang energy, led with integrity?

The ancient Celtic God Father Dagda (as represented by the Green Man), was more earthbound in his representation.  Through the cycles of agriculture, seasons and fertility, he embodied the primordial fatherly attributes of abundant provider, nurturer / protector, giver of life, and sage.  Our stunning men’s necklace with Green Man pendant is a perfect Father’s Day gift for the gentle giant in your life.

When is Father’s Day?

Father’s Day is celebrated in over 70 countries around the world, observed on the 3rd Sunday of June.  Originally started in the USA in 1910 by Sonora Dodd, who was brought up by her father after her mother died in childbirth, the celebration has been going strong in Scotland since the 1960s.

We have a selection of men’s chains and pendants for Father’s Day gifts, ranging from stunning Viking pendants such as our Double Headed Silver Axe, Fenrir Wolf Head or Viking Raven Skull, to men’s cross necklaces, made from high quality Sterling Silver.

A special men’s ring could also be your preferred men’s jewellery gift. Whether for your Dad, Grandad, Stepdad or whoever the important father figures in your life are, you are sure to find the perfect fit in our stunning men’s rings in silver, tungsten and titanium.
