Celebrating Women and Mothers

Royal Mile Silver is a Women-led Business

Royal Mile Silver has been a women-led business since its humble beginnings back in 1997, as part of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival market.  We have always supported working mothers – mums to our babies, to our furry friends and our clans.  We have mothered our friends in times of need, those we’ve just met with a kind word, those who are tending a broken heart.

We have battled the very fiercest of Edinburgh winds to keep our market going, shared tea with our fellow traders and have been gentle with our customers, intuitive to their wants and wishes.  We are excited to be celebrating this week with you, celebrating ourselves and the Women and Mothers in your life.

Honouring Tradition: Celtic Jewellery for Mother’s Day

As Mother’s Day approaches, we start thinking about the mother figures in our lives, the nurturers, our Mums or the friends that always welcome you with a hug and a warm and hearty meal.  Gifting a stunning piece of silver Celtic jewellery, a talisman in the way of a woman’s necklace, is a beautiful way to show your love and appreciation.

Rich in symbolism and steeped in history, Celtic-inspired jewellery offers a unique and enduring tribute to the nurturing spirit of motherhood.  Silver Celtic earrings with double Celtic knot-work represent unity and growth, such as the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.

Which Celtic symbol represents the Woman or the Mother?

The Triple Spiral, also known as the Triskelion, Triskele or the Triple Goddess, has been used since pre-Celtic days to symbolise the three stages of the Divine Feminine: The Maiden, The Mother & The Crone.

The Triple Spiral represents the eternal continuation of life and death, referring to the three stages of our own existence – the innocent and budding potential of Spring, the Divine Feminine standing in her power in nature (Mother Earth, Mother Nature) and the wisdom and embodied knowledge of experience (The Crone is known as The Cailleach in Celtic paganism).

The Triple Spiral is a reminder of the constant cycle of life, death and rebirth; of youth, maturity and ageing.  Our Celtic Triple Spiral woman’s necklace is the perfect gift to mark this very moment in time.  Right now, is where you are meant to be, perfect as you are.

“There was never and never will be, a time when we did not or do not exist in some form”

Flowers also represent the Divine Feminine

Perhaps flowers are so strongly associated with the Divine Feminine as we can witness the eternal cycle of life and death play out amongst their pretty petals.  Not only are flowers beautiful, but their strength allows them to withstand life’s storms intact.  They are ethereal entities that have always captured the imagination and love of humans and bees alike.  Our gold and silver Spring jewellery collection is inspired by our native Scottish flowers.

Scottish Bluebells, Dandelions and Daisies are abundant in Edinburgh in the Spring and Summer months.  They feed our pollinators, so plants can feed us.  Fields and lawns are freckled with Daisies. Dandelions poke out of every nook and cranny, and badgers run amok through the Bluebells of hidden East Lothian woods.

Why do we celebrate International Women’s Day?

Did you know that in Edinburgh City Centre, there are more statues of animals than of women?  We love animals, but of the two hundred statues and monuments spectacularly displayed around this wonderfully diverse city, only five are dedicated to women.  The ancient Celts believed in the cyclical energy of nature and the Divine Feminine to keep energy ever flowing, but they also believed in balance and equilibrium.  The Celtic Triquetra or Trinity Knot symbolises unity and interconnectedness, balance and equity.

Celebrated on the 8th of March to honour the achievements of women worldwide, International Women’s Day raises awareness about the ongoing struggle for gender equality and women’s rights –  with hopes to inspire action and re-ignite an inclusive and equitable society for all.

‘Imagine a gender-equal world. A world free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination. A world that’s diverse, equitable, and inclusive. A world where difference is valued and celebrated.’

Maybe this was a world the Celts lived in and we are finding our way back.

We wish a Happy Mother’s Day and International Women’s Day to you and all the remarkable women in your life!  Be part of our women-led business by gifting your mothers and nurturers a piece of their Celtic heritage, some beautiful spring-inspired silver earrings or a silver Triple Spiral pendant – a symbol of the power of the Divine Feminine that dwells within all of us.
