The Ouroboros is a symbol that has spanned millennia and many cultures. Known as the oldest allegorical symbol in alchemy, the ouroboros represents the concept of eternity and endless return, literally meaning ‘tail-devourer’ in Greek. The oldest-known ouroboros appeared on a golden shrine in the tomb of Tutankhamen in Egypt in the 13th Century BC and in Norse mythology, the serpent Jörmungandr encircles the world with its tail in its mouth.
